From a very young age she wanted to fix things - people, ever since she and her cousin Adeola Oshodi got hurt one summer with a broken arm and she [Martha] was not. Two identical cousins (a rarity by itself) one hurt one not, and she never could understand it. And it was this incident that drove her to become a doctor. Ever since the incident with the year that wasn't, the impressionable young woman who was and followed the Doctor around (in some cases) like a puppy - with eyes wide and in awe, has become a strong, confident woman who not only has saved the world but has defied military authority in order to do what she knew was right. She has a strong sense of good and evil - having seen evil upclose, and she doesn't like it. She has a constitution of iron and a will just as strong, and she will never rest until she knows that whatever they're up against is gone. Brief History: A woman who walked the Earth, Dr. Martha Jones (MD) is a secret keeper, a time traveler and a hero of an unremembered year. The middle child of Francine and Clive Jones, Martha Jones began her affiliation with the man known as the Doctor - some might say - by complete accident, but how often does the universe work completely randomly? A medical student at the Royal Hope Hospital, Martha Jones found herself - along with everyone else, staff, patients and students - stuck on the moon (thanks to the Judoon) when a Plasmavore was hiding within. Despite evident reluctance on the part of the Doctor, he invited Martha to come along with him following the hospital's return to Earth. It was supposed to be one trip. Just one, but after meeting William Shakespeare and defeating the Carrionites, the Doctor amended the deal. One trip was now turned into two: one to the past and one to the future. They ended up in the city of New New York, followed by a jaunt to the city of New York (the original) during the Great Depression where they found themselves facing the Cult of Skaro and the newly-hybridized Dalek Sec, now half human. Two trips became three, and then the Doctor returned Martha home - the same day she had left... or he was about to when some on the television grabbed his attention just as he was dematerialized. After the gala presenting the Lazarus Project in which it was revealed that Professor Richard Lazarus had become a monster, Martha continued accompanying the Doctor on his travels. Their travels brought them in contact with alien forms, some friendly some not. Among the most trying of these was a necessary three-month period of hiding in 1913. After an encounter with the Family of Blood lead to the doctor using the TARDIS' Chameleon Arch to turn the Doctor into the human John Smith. With the Doctor Human and Martha the only one of the two with any clue what was going on, it was up to her to not only keep the secret, but - in the guise of his servant (facing issues of class gaps and racist jeers - attempt to keep him safe.. Unfortunately the instructions left for her by the doctor left out quite a few things and it became her responsibility to bring the doctor back...even if it meant that John Smith had to die in the process. Following a run-in with the Weeping Angels, which sent the both Martha and the Doctor back to the 1960s, the two travelers found themselves thrown to the end of the universe with Captain Jack Harkness. After the return of the Doctor's arch-nemesis the Master (who had used a Chameleon Arch of his own to hide himself as Professor Yana), the world fell under the reign of The Master, who had been elected Britain's Prime Minister under the name Harold Saxon. Her family, Jack and the Doctor held captive on the UNIT airborne military aircraft carrier Valiant and the world under his thumb, with six billion Toclafane, Martha was teleported from the carrier and wandered the world for an entire year, under instructions to leave and defeat the Master. After 365 days away from Britain, Martha landed back on its shores - having become a legend in her own time. Arriving back on British soil by boat under cover of darkness, Martha was met by a man named Thomas Milligan, a doctor-turned-freedom fighter. Having traveled the world, under the guise of searching for a weapon to kill the Master, she had seen Japan destroyed, the people of South Africa burned alive, worldwide destruction which changed her. After a visit to one Professor Docherty, the capture and dissection of a caught Toclafane then betrayal and position compromised by the professor, the Master came to Earth (from the Valiant), killed Tom and captured Martha. The pieces of the weapon she'd been gathering taken from her and destroyed, it was revealed that it had been a ruse; Martha had not been gathering a weapon, she had been telling a story, about the Doctor and how to defeat the Master. After the use of the Archangel Satellite Network freed the Doctor and with the Master out of the picture, the Paradox Machine (which had been made out of the cannibalized TARDIS) was broken, time began to rewind an entire year. Only those aboard the Valiant - at the center of the storm remembered the events of "The Year That Never Was." Following the events of The-Year-That-Never-Was Martha could no longer continue the way things had been. Having seen too much human suffering she just could not leave. Not Earth. Not then. Making the decision to stay behind was something that she broke to the Doctor after visiting not only her family - recovering from the ordeal together - but also Professor Docherty and calling Tom Milligan (who was working in pediatrics), both alive, both without any knowledge of what had happened. She left the TARDIS, leaving the Doctor with a cellular phone, one of his specially made super-phones, with the promise that she would see him again. She walked away from the TARDIS with her head held high, ready for the world. After leaving the Doctor, Martha looked for employment that suited her, the new her. Completing her medical training, she was contacted by a representative of the Unified Intelligence Taskforce, (formerly the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce) - "someone" had put in a good word for her and she was offered a position. It was as a member of UNIT that she visited Torchwood 3 in Cardiff on the request of her friend Captain Jack Harkness. Once there she took part in an investigation into an organization known as the Pharm, where she went undercover and was saved from possible death by Owen Harper shortly before the man sustained a fatal bullet wound. Asked to stay on as their temporary Medical Officer, things only got stranger from there. Not only did Owen come back from the dead but Martha was turned into an old woman by a strange force - "Death" - that had possessed Owen. After this incident she left Torchwood for her job at UNIT.... unfortunately work kept her from attending Gwen Cooper's wedding, of which she was invited. Sometime later, as promised, Martha made contact with the Doctor, needing his assistance with their ATMOS sting operation. This became much bigger than a simple raid, leading to Martha's being cloned and impersonated - her double working against UNIT, helping the Sontaran invasion plan. Upon the ending of the situation, with the Sontarans gone, Martha said her goodbyes, but the TARDIS had other plans for Martha, the Doctor and the Doctor's new companion - Donna Noble - taking them to the planet Messaline where a war was raging. Martha was separated from the Doctor and Donna when more fighting broke out between the Hath and the Humans and a charge was detonated by Jenny - a genetic replicant of the Doctor. Spending her time with the Hath and going above ground to avoid the tunnels and find Donna and the Doctor - Martha was very much prepared to return home... Especially after watching Jenny die - although Martha had not gotten to know her very well. With the TARDIS no longer in control, Martha was returned home to her job at UNIT, leaving the traveling to the Doctor with a smile and a hug, and going back to her fiancee - Tom Milligan (yes, the very same), but it would only be a short time before the world was yet again in danger and Martha found herself in the center of it... Having received a promotion to medical officer of Project Indigo in New York City (and breaking her engagement to Tom), Martha found herself entrusted not only with the project itself but also the Osterhagen Key... Despite warnings from Jack Harkness, under orders Martha attempted to use Project Indigo - a teleportation device scavenged from the Sontarans - to get herself first to her mother and then to Germany and Osterhagen Station 5. From the station in Germany she and three other internationally-spread stations could - if necessary - bring about the end of the Earth. Following the events of Earth's moving by the Daleks to the Medusa Cascade, not only did she meet the elusive Rose Tyler, but after all her experiences therein Martha Jones began to question her job with UNIT... After leaving the TARDIS with Jack and Mickey Smith, Martha was unfortunately recalled to UNIT HQ for a debriefing and then batteries of questions, tests, and examinations trying to figure out how the machine had succeeded in getting her to Germany. All the while, being treated more like a test subject than a medical officer, Jack's words as they left the TARDIS -"Y'know, I'm not sure about UNIT these days... Maybe there's something else you could be doing." - had stayed somewhere in the back of Martha's mind and now seemed to echo over and over. This wasn't what she'd signed up for. Not at all. Finally after her trip to Torchwood - after enduring another long day of questioning and testing, Martha walked up to her superior and lay a resignation letter on his desk. Not paying attention to the customary two weeks notice - her desk already emptied two days before - she grabbed her bag, leaving her identification and clearance card on her desk, and left the building. Her abrupt departure left UNIT wanting her back. Not only because of UNIT's unfinished business over Project Indigo, but also because of their demands for the return of the Osterhagen Key, which Martha - unable to destroy it - hid just at the Doctor had request. What became clear was that Martha would not be free of UNIT until she either gave the key back or disappeared completely... After several weeks - having sold her apartment in New York, buying a new cellular phone for calls on Earth (of course keeping her Superphone with her at all times) - she booked a flight under her Samantha Jones alias for London, where she stayed with her sister Tish for a few days before leaving and checking into a hotel. The decision had finally been made; she needed help. She couldn't do this on her own and short of calling the Doctor - who was undoubtably off on another adventure with Donna (little did she know...) she decided to phone another friend: Captain Jack Harkness. She hired by Torchwood and given immunity and protection from UNIT, she has been there (as Owen's replacement).
